From the June 20th Soap Opera Update:

the girls of
summer

Forget the beach! All of the hottest women are inside your home... and on your TV screens!

With most primetime television series on summer hiatus, actors could take a nice long vacation. Instead, many choose to keep right on working. Let's take a peek at how some of your favorite ladies are spending their summer break!

RENA SOFER (OH, GROW UP)
"That's my Nedley!" It seems like almost yesterday that we heard those words echoing throughout the Quartermaine mansion on GENERAL HOSPITAL thanks to Rena Sofer's Lois. This is one of the many memories fans have of the Emmy-winning actress and her outrageous alter ego since Sofer took off for greener pastures. Last year, this multi-talented star made her second move to primetime (the first was when she joined the cast of Aaron Spelling's now-defunct MELROSE PLACE) on ABC's OH, GROW UP, playing the wife of a gay man. While that show didn't last, Sofer did win rave reviews for her toxic role. Now the raven-haired stunner is hoping that her NBC pilot NEWS FROM THE EDGE gets picked up for next season. Meanwhile, she's keeping busy with film work. Sofer was one of the stars of the recent Edward Norton/Jenna Elfman (DHARMA AND GREG) comedy "Keeping The Faith." Look for her this summer, too! She made it through basic training and joined the film world's big leagues, starring in the Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones vehicle "Traffic." One thing is certain: No matter how many projects fail or flourish for Sofer, she will always land on her feet... and on a screen!

CYNTHIA WATROS (TITUS)
Cynthia Watros can officially celebrate her exit from GUIDING LIGHT where she won an Emmy as Annie! When any actor leaves a comfortable spot on a soap to "pursue other interests," there is a certain degree of fear that he may never be heard from again. But this is Watros' year. Not only is she the star of TITUS, this year's breakout comedy, but she's also working on a film, "Mercy Streets," with TITUS co-star Stacy Keach and Eric Roberts.

PORTIA DeROSSI (ALLY MCBEAL)
Portia DeRossi has received tons of attention playing the caustic, hard-nosed sexpot Nelle on ALLY MCBEAL, and she's had the opportunity to show what she's got on the big screen as well. Last year, you'll remember that she starred in the biblical thriller (sort of like "The Exorcist") "Stigmata." This summer, however, she tackles a different topic in the film "Two Girls From Lemoore," which also stars LOIS & CLARK's Teri Hatcher.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER)
Sarah Michelle Gellar filmed the scandalous "Cruel Intentions" two years ago. For the Vampire Slayer, it was such a fabulous experience that she didn't want to do anything else unless it measured up. After a year's break, Gellar will star in "The It Girl," the story of a nobody who endears herself to the most eligible bachelor in New York's elite. After that? Gellar tackles the drama "Harvard Man!"

JANE KRAKOWSKI (ALLY MCBEAL)
This saucy and sassy ALLY MCBEAL secretary seems to be stretching for a younger audience these days. While her Elaine has men wrapped around her finger, Jane Krakowski cracked up kids as Betty in "The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas." Now she's spending her summer voicing the animated flick "The Ice Age." In this prehistoric comedy, Krakowski's playing a sexy sloth. She's in good company: ER's Goran Visnjic is also heard.

COURTNEY COX ARQUETTE (FRIENDS)
This "neurotic friend" has been one busy bee! Cox Arquette filmed all three "Scream" movies with her husband David Arquette, and they're back together again this summer filming "3,000 Miles To Graceland." This action/thriller is shooting in Vancouver and Las Vegas, and also stars silver screen hunks Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell. With FRIENDS looking as if it will run another season, look for Cox Arquette to finish up by August.

LUCY LIU (ALLY MCBEAL)
ALLY MCBEAL's Ling is certainly seeing her share of tabloid headlines during the tumultuous shooting of the new "Charlie's Angels." Problems with the script may be the least of this film's worries - newspapers have reported that Liu has had issues with her wardrobe and that she took part in an on-set spat with the movie's Bosley, Bill Murray. Despite all the drama, the movie is still expected to be in theaters this November.

I can't picture Bill Murray as Bosley.
